What Goes in a Home Management Binder: 12 Sections

A home binder should answer the questions your household asks again and again. Twelve sections cover most homes: home information, weekly home review, family responsibilities, meal planning, cleaning, maintenance, emergency information, contacts, important documents, budget, vehicles and annual planning. Start with three and keep passwords, full account numbers and original documents out of it.

The twelve sections

  1. Home information: address details, Wi-Fi name, bin days, where the water, gas and electricity shut-offs are, appliance list.
  2. Weekly home review: the review checklist, this week's calendar, open loops.
  3. Family responsibilities: who owns which jobs, chore chart, school and work timetables.
  4. Meal planning: this week's plan, favourite meals, staples you always buy.
  5. Cleaning: your cleaning rhythm, room cards, supplies list.
  6. Maintenance: maintenance calendar, appliance log, trusted repair people.
  7. Emergency information: emergency contacts, utility numbers, meeting place, optional care notes.
  8. Contacts: school, doctor's surgery, neighbours, landlord, babysitter, vet.
  9. Important documents: a list of where originals are kept, never the originals.
  10. Budget: monthly budget, bill due dates, subscriptions and renewals.
  11. Vehicles: registration and insurance renewal dates, service history, inspection dates.
  12. Annual planning: important dates, yearly goals, the renewals calendar.

No. Most homes start with three and add sections as real questions come up.
Can I fill it in on screen?
The Kept Simple pages are fillable PDFs, so you can type and then print.
