Start moving again

Start moving again, without the pressure.

If it has been months or years, the win is not intensity. It is showing up for something small enough that you cannot talk yourself out of it.

Most restarts die in the first week because they start too big. A punishing first workout does not build a habit; it builds a reason to quit. So the first week has one job: prove to yourself that showing up is easy.

Your first week back

  1. Days 1 and 2: a 10-minute walk

That is the entire plan. Out the door, ten minutes, back. If ten feels like a lot, do five. The point is not the distance. It is proving the habit fits into a normal day.

  2. Days 3 and 4: the same walk, plus five minutes

Same time of day if you can. Same route is fine. You are not chasing a number, you are laying down a groove your week can settle into.

  3. Day 5: rest, or a gentle stretch

A planned easy day is part of the plan, not a failure of it. This is where most programs skip ahead and lose people. You will not.

  4. Days 6 and 7: 15 to 20 minutes, and notice how it feels

By now the walk is a thing you do, not a thing you decide. Notice that. That feeling, not the step count, is what carries you into week two.

A five-minute desk reset

On the days you cannot get out, three moves undo the worst of a long sit. Stand and roll your shoulders back ten times. Do ten slow calf raises at your desk. Then a gentle standing hip stretch, thirty seconds each side. Five minutes, no equipment, and your body stops setting like concrete between meetings.

Make it stick: attach it to something you already do

Willpower is not the answer; a trigger is. Anchor the walk to a habit you never skip. After the morning coffee, shoes on. After you close the laptop, ten minutes outside. The existing habit becomes the alarm clock for the new one, and you stop relying on motivation you may not have that day.
